Editig: blog task
The clip I have chosen to write about is a cut from the movie Now You See Me 2. This is the part when the group steal a chip from a high security area which contains a huge power within it.
Within the first 6 seconds, we are shown 2 straight cuts from one character and a brief second is shown of another character before the second cut comes in back to our first character. The speed of the cut shows the audience that both mini scenes are occurring at the same time. It as creates more tension to the audience as things are escalating at a faster speed. This added with the skills shown by the actors and actress also add to the engagement of the audience to this particular scene.
At two minutes and nine seconds, the tension reaches one of its maximums as one of the characters are seen taking the card for a brief second. Although the guard is not certain what it was, he shouts out 'what is it'. This sudden change in pace makes the audience feel much more worried for the character as they feel like he has been caught. Another aspect that increases the tension up to this point is the music. The music intensifies as the scene goes on but once the character is caught out, the music stops abruptly to mark the end of this scene.
Throughout the first part of the scene, the camera followed the card movement. Wherever the card was getting thrown, the camera would be focused on there. This makes the audience focused more of the card rather than the other things in the same scene. The editor wants to send a message to the audience that what matters isn't the people around it but more of the thing everyone wants. Whether the audience chooses to accept and understand this is up to the audience to decide.
To many people, the position the actor stands in at 2:15 won't show a lot of information, however, to someone who knows the basics of cardistry or card magic, his hands are int he position of a palm hold. This makes this particular part more intense for them because the audience really feels as if the actor has palming the card in his hand. As the guards get closer, the music is slowly coming back in at a much slower and quieter way than before again to build up this tension that makes the audience want to keep watching it.
From the time 2:49, the music volume increases once again. This time the nerve wreaking thing isn't hiding the card but how to get the card out. The upbeat, spy-like music makes the audience on edge. It creates a feeling that something is about to happen to either the character or card. This could be a good thing or a bad thing.
At the timing of 3:37, the tension reaches its climax. They have successfully stolen the card without being caught but now they have to devise a plan in order to sneak the card out. The audience wants to know whether the group would be able to successfully be able to get the card out of the metal detector room. By increasing the time length of this part by having each character walk through one by one makes the audience even more nervous for them. This nervousness dies down at around 4:18 when the card passes through at the same time as the wallet. If the audience member supports the group then it is a moment of satisfaction as the group was able to steal the card and escape without getting caught by the guards.
