Sound video feedback and learner response

Sound video feedback and learner response

1)

2)
  • Parallel opening works well - the images + text approach is effective and there is a define emotional effect on audience.
  • Initially, the contrapuntal doesn't feel like a massive change in the mood but as it continues and the violence escalates in clip 2 it does seem more effective.
  • Using two pieces of music doesn't quite meet the brief but still an effective response.
3)

WWW:
  • Good choice of images
  • Sound effects were achieved
  • Contrapuntal was effective
  • Timing was good
  • Parallel was done well
  • Clear contrast
  • Transitions were good
  • Entertaining
EBI:
  • Contrapuntal sounds are a little off
  • Stick to the brief
  • Stick to pictures only or videos only
4)

All the things I would change and all the things I think did well are already mentioned above apart from actually reading the brief in detail which is similar to stick to the brief.

5)

Aman and Henna's:
Firstly, they stuck to the brief by using one soundtrack and two sets of images, especially by having the parallel part in colour and the contrapuntal section in black and white just made more of a contrast between the two and the difference was extremely clear.

Michael's:
Even though I feel like his contrapuntal was a bit on the edge, his parallel was done really nicely. The music fitted really well and it created almost like a MV feeling to it. The timing of the song beats fitted well including the beat drops and the 4/4 timing of it.

Daisy and Tamzin's:
Like Michaels, I feel like their contrapuntal was a bit on the edge however their parallel was also extremely well done. The slow paced lovely dovey song fitted with the chosen scenes. The way the music was played with ballroom dancing and couple dancing made the warm feeling just a bit emphasised upon creating a nice feeling.

Sound Blog Task

Once Upon A Time In The West (1968):

What sounds do you hear? How do they help to build up tension?

There are sounds of the fly, the windmill the train in the background  and dripping water from the roof. What builds up the tension is that each of them is show individually and in a sequence. When the sequence is repeated, the sound of the particular action is louder and faster than before. This all keeps going until the camera shot of the train is put in which is entered along with the loud noise of the train tracks chugging.

Can you identify the sound bridge? What is the effect on the audience?

The sound bridge is the train and when it finally is shown, it is accompanied with a loud train chugging noise which is supposed to make the audience feel a bit shocked as it is a sudden change. It is a sudden change because the past scenes were all individual quieter sounds of flies or dripping water when suddenly a train appears and the sound of the train is really loud.

Lighting: still image analysis

Lighting: still image analysis

Picture 1:
High Key on the smoke but low key on the face. The smoke in front of the character is very visible but her face is only half lit and the background is completely dark. This might show how she wants to try hide in the shadows, possibly because she has done something illegal. The light shines from the bottom left on the smoke and there is a sort of side backlit on the left side of her face to create the half lit face.

Picture 2:
Low key lighting is used. The lighting only shows her face and part of the wall behind her. The rest is hidden in the shadows again creating this sense of mystery and crime. The lighting comes from above her head and one from the right side to show the wall.

Picture 3:
High key lighting is used however you could argue that some aspects are low key therefore showing the shadows under the eyes. The key light shines from the top and from our side lighting everything up from the front and I think there is another set of lights shining purely just down on him that is stronger than the key light because shadows are formed around his eye. By having light shine on him from above, it shows his power and sort of as if the gods are looking upon him.

Picture 4:
Low key lighting. A lot of shadows around. The light is coming from top right shining down on him. This again makes the character seem more powerful as he has the power from above. I also think lighting was used directed at the gun to emphasise it.

Picture 5:
I think a mix of high key and low key was used in this one because lighting was used strongly to light up her face for us to be able to see her facial expression however, this light also caused a strong shadow of her behind her. This emphasises on the character and her emotions and situation.

Picture 6:
This one is debatable but I think it is low key because of the blinds. The blinds create lines of shadows across the pair and both of the faces are barely lit up. The shadows creates the more calm ad chill atmosphere around the pair and their action shows us that they wanted this atmosphere. It emphasises this moment to the audience because of the mood it creates.

Picture 7:
Low key lighting. Only a backlight is used to create the silhouette on the characters and the shadows in front of them. This makes their face unrecognisable and due to this, it creates a mysterious feeling about them to the audience.

Picture 8:
I would say this is low key lighting as it looks like there is only one light used coming from the left hand side. It manages to light up half her face completely ad the other half is in the shadow. This creates a thriller like feeling to it as her facial expression looks scared/shocked and she seems to be staring at something.

Picture 9:
High Key lighting. Every part of that picture has no shadows apart form her neck so I believe the main light is shone from above down on her and the filler light is shining at her head on with a bit of angle from the top shining down. It emphasises her facial expression to make the audience really see how focused she is on her praying or wishing.

Picture 10:
Low key lighting. Most of the picture is in shadows, you can see a faint silhouette of a man at the top of the stairs looking down. There is backlight only which lights him up so we see him. It creates an eerie feeling which makes the audience feel as if there is something wrong with him or he is about to do something.

Picture 11:
High key lighting. Both faces are light up so we can see their facial expression clearly and there are very little shadows in the picture. It creates a warm atmosphere around them which doesn't make the audience feel tense but puts the audience in a more calm mood.

Film Noir:

Film Noir lighting usually uses low key lighting to create a lot of harsh shadows and contrast of black and white rather than the 3 point lighting people usually went for. These were often used in crime films.

The following is an example of film noir lighting.

Transformation Video and Learner Response

Mood Board:

 Video:

Teachers Feedback:
  • Framing is a definite EBI - there is a lot of dead space in the shot. It's good to see the make up whilst at work but could still get a lot closer.
  • Comparing with daisy's, I prefer the colour - you can see the effect of the makeover more clearly and see the changes developing.
  • Major issue: no final result to the makeover. This is an important lesson for media production - you've let the bloopers actually prevent you from meeting the brief.
  • No real reference to Hollywood/ 1950s glamour etc and no end result either.

Student feedback:

WWW:
  • Good use of captions
  • Love the Bloopers
  • Music fitted the video
  • Paced well
EBI:
  • Showed the final look
  • Slow the pace down a bit
  • Meet the time requirement
  • You were on camera

Self evaluation:

I misunderstood the brief and thought it meant that the video had to be 2 minutes long instead of the time-lapse had to be 2 minutes long hence why the transformation was sped up to such an extent. I could have cut parts of the transformation or just slowed down the speedup. The camera shot was far too wide which was because we tried to fit in the person actually doing the make up also but we should have moved the camera forward so the models face was more in shot.

Mood board self evaluation:

From the mood board, you can see that we have used 2 main topics, holly wood stars and pin up girls fashion. The bright colours were a definite and the very stylish hairstyles were also a must for the look. We took these two points and built on it and ended up with the look in the end.

Improvements in the future:
Firstly, the camera shot would be closer to see the models face clearer. As for the editing, the choice of music would be different to fit the genre of the look ad the time-lapse would be slower, bits of the video will be cut out to meet the time limit given. I would also add shots of the final look at the end of the video before the bloopers.

What I have learnt:
I have learnt that there is more to just how someone looks to create a feeling. The pace of a video, the music the pace of the music, the whole process is equally as difficult and important. In other words, to create a good piece of work, I need to take everything into account whether its sound, camera angle to makeup ad costumes.
